  • Adele's '25' Sales Up to 2.8 Million in U.S., Headed for 3 Million Debut Week

    Adele's “25.”
Further, of that figure, 1.45 million are digital albums -- by far a record haul for a digital set.
25 has already surpassed the single-week album sales record (since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991), previously held by *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached, when it debuted with 2,416,000 in the week ending March 26, 2000.
And yet, the tracking week still isn’t over!
There are slightly more than two days left in the sales tracking week to be tabulated (as it ends at the close of business on Thursday, Nov. 26). Currently, industry forecasters suggest the album could finish the week with 3 million sold. Billboard is scheduled to report 25's debut week sales on Sunday, Nov. 29, once Nielsen has finished processing its weekly data.

25 was released on Nov. 20 through XL/Columbia Records. It is Adele’s third studio album, and follows her blockbuster 21 set, which spent 24 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold 11.2 million copies in the U.S. (It is presumed that 25 will debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Dec. 12, with its top 10 scheduled to be announced on Nov. 29. In related news, 25 mania is pumping a big gain for 21, which may jump back into the Billboard 200’s top 10 for the first time in two-and-a-half years.)
25’s download haul is already more than the former single-week download record-holder: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which sold 662,000 digital copies in its first week (ending May 29, 2011). (Billboard earlier reported that industry sources said 25 sold 900,000 downloads through the iTunes Store alone on its first day.)

Nielsen Music began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. Prior to 1991, there was no authoritative music sales tracking service in the U.S, thus it was mostly unknown how many copies of an album or song/single were sold in a single week.
  • The 2013 KCA Nominees Are Here!

You've all been waiting an entire 365 days to hear the 2013 KCA nominees. And guess what?! The day is finally here! Wahoo! So who's in the running for a Blimp? Oh, just Taylor Swift, The Biebs and SpongeBob SquarePants to name a few...

But that's not all! Favorite TV Show is a nail-biter this year, with shows like iCarly, Victorious and Wizards of Waverly Place ringing in their last KCA nod ever (tear!). But hey, wouldn't it be nice to go out with a Blimp? Miranda Cosgrove sure thinks so. "I'm so honored to be nominated and thrilled that iCarly was recognized by our amazing fans," she told TV Guide.

We know you're still making up your mind on who to root for, but we've got to throw another tough decision your way. Hint: it's a BIG TIME category that can only have ONE winner. It's Favorite Music Group! One Direction and Big Time Rush are just some of the nominees that are going head to head (too bad only one can win!).

Don't forget to get those votes ready, 'cause this is about to be one of the silliest, slimiest, most awesome KCAs yet!

  • Mumford & Sons Win Top Prize at Fun.-filled Grammy Awards

Artists responsible for two of the biggest-sellers of 2012 were rewarded with Grammy Awards on Sunday night at Staples Center, a rare moment in which public taste and the ballots of Recording Academy voters were in sync.

Fun. was named best new artist and their "We Are Young," which has sold 6.2 million copies, was named song of the year. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra was crowned record of the year; it has sold 7 million since its release in January 2012 and was Billboard's No. 1 song of the year.

"I won't mind if I don't have another record like this one," Gotye said after his third win of the night. "I think I've written better songs and I hope to keep writing better songs."

Mumford & Sons won the album of the year award for "Babel," which registered the biggest  sales week for an album in the first 10 months of 2012, selling 600,000 copies. It has sold 1.7 million total. Mumford's only other win was for long-form video for the film "Big Easy Express."

Before the Grammys spread out the big four among three acts, the night appeared to belong to the Black Keys. They won the rock song, rock performance and rock album Grammys, and the Akron, Ohio, duo's guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach was also named producer of the year, non-classical. One of his projects, Dr. John's "Locked Down," was named best blues album.

Gotye and fun.'s Nate Ruess were surprised when their names were called. Gotye thought he would go home empty handed -- instead he has three trophies -- and Ruess figured  Frank Ocean or the Lumineers would win.

Spreading the top four awards among three acts is rare enough, but the only time in the last 12 years the Grammys were spread among three significant hitmakers was in 2005 with Green Day, U2 and John Legend.

Auerbach led the way with four awards. His partner, Patrick Carney, Gotye and Jay-Z  won three awards each. Besides record of the year, Gotye's "Making Mirrors" was named best alternative album and "Somebody That I Used to Know" was deemed best pop duo/group performance.

Jay-Z won two Grammys for his duet with Kanye West, "N****s in Paris" -- rap song and rap performance - the rap/sung collaboration with Kanye West, Frank Ocean and The-Dream for "No Church in the Wild."
In the genre awards, Zac Brown Band's "Uncaged" took home the country album Grammy; Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" received the pop vocal album award, Drake's "Take Care" won rap album and "Black Radio" by Robert Glasper Experiment won on the R&B album category.

Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" was honored twice, one win for best country song for songwriters Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins and again to Carrie Underwood for country solo performance.
Taylor Swift, who opened the show with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" in a production that drew inspiration from Cirque du Soleil and "Alice in Wonderland," won a single Grammy: song written for visual media for "Safe and Sound," the song she wrote with John Paul White, T Bone Burnett and Joy Williams for "Hunger Games."

For all the talk of EDM having its moment, the Grammy Awards emphasized the other trend in pop music, the return to formality in songwriting in several genres and the embracing of the rustic in pop. Justin Timberlake went big band, Rihanna recalled torch singers of the '50s and Miguel's suaveness recalled Marvin Gaye and won him a new fan.

"I don't know who the hell you are," Kelly Clarkson said in her acceptance speech, addressing Miguel, "but that was the sexiest thing I have ever seen."

One production number after another placed instrumentalists on equal footing with the stars. Bruno Mars, a good example, was in a line with his band and horn players, just as Mumford and Sons and Lumineers did; music, these Grammys stated, is a communal activity created where people gather and not in isolation with electronics and overdubs.

"It's cyclical," Zac Brown said backstage after winning country album, "and it's great to have people who play their own instruments, write their own songs and form real bands. Mumford and Sons is one of my favorite bands and they won album of the year. They deserve it. It's great to see real music is getting the spotlight."

Instruments beyond the usual guitar and piano received a fair amount of air time - big drums, string basses, a tuba, banjos were in the spotlight in performances that included Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Jack White and the Black Keys. The show included instrumental jazz, folk music, country music from the 1950s, reggae and a moving tribute to the late Levon Helm.

"In lots of these multi-genre settings, they could always use a little more music from Nashville," Carrie Underwood said backstage. "This year they did a good job of having a little bit of everything."
As usual, the Grammys create unique medleys with varying results. Rather than carp about any that did not work, they landed a gem in the blending of Bruno Mars' "Locked out of Heaven," the Police's "Walking on the Moon" and Bob Marley's "Could You be Loved."

The Grammys, unlike the Oscars, tend to not fill the script with inside jokes and references. That changed when Jennifer Lopez came out to the solo pop performance, she was wearing a modest, for her, charcoal gray dress. "As you can see I read the memo," she said, referring to CBS' pre-show warning that "buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered" and that performers should "avoid shear see-through clothing."
Among other artists with multiple wins were the team of Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile, jazz pianist Chick Corea, Christian artist Matt Redmond and bassist-composer Esperanza Spalding. Corea's two wins put his career take at 20, the same number guitarist Pat Metheny hit this year after winning best jazz instrumental album.

Corea and Pat Metheny, both of whom have now won 20 Grammy Awards each, unveiled their plans for the coming year. Corea, who released six albums in 2012, says he will put out 10 this year. Metheny, who won for his Unity band project, said the Grammy win is part of the impetus to continue working with the group and they will tour again this year and release a second album in 2014.
  • Justin Timberlake Premieres 'Suit & Tie,' 'Pusher Love Girl' at Grammys

Justin Timberlake continued his grand reentrance to music at the Grammys, as he performed "Suit & Tie" and another new song, "Pusher Love Girl," before a televised audience for the first time. After a generous introduction from Beyoncé and Ellen DeGeneres, CBS' color telecast faded to near-black and white sepia tones and the much-hyped "triple-threat" took the stage.

"JT & the Tennessee Kids" (as the show-stopping orchestra called themselves) opened with Timberlake's most familiar new song, the retro R&B-tinged "Suit & Tie." Jay-Z also left the comfort of his front-row seat to perform his guest verse on the new single. Before the party could die down, the onscreen color returned as JT jumped into "Pusher Love Girl," another new track premiered last weekend at Timberlake's New Orleans comeback headlining gig.

During the commercial break the following the performance, fans got a double dose of Timberlake ads: a Target spot hyping new LP "The 20/20 Experience" and a commercial for Bud Light Platinum, whom recently named the singer their creative director.

The performance was only the start of a busy night for Timberlake. Following the Grammys, he's set to take the stage for a headlining gig at Los Angeles' Hollywood Palladium.
  • Justin Timberlake Loses the Tie, Keeps Party Going at Post-Grammys Concert

    Jeff Kravitz, FilmMagic

Following his stylish performance at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, where two of his new songs -- "Suit & Tie" and "Pusher Love Girl" -- saw their TV debuts, Justin Timberlake moved the show to the Hollywood Palladium in L.A. to hype his upcoming album, "The 20/20 Experience."

Other than a surprise performance during Super Bowl weekend, this was Timberlake's first major concert appearance since touring his previous album, 2006's multi-platinum "FutureSex/LoveSounds" -- and one of his most exclusive, as the Palladium's 4,000 capacity proves far more intimate than the arenas and stadiums Timberlake could fill with ease.

Immediately, it became apparent that Timberlake's Palladium show was the post-Grammys celebration not to miss.

"It's the hottest ticket in town, and super hard to get -- everyone wants to go there," explained Cash Money's Jay Sean, who rushed to the theater from the Staples Center in downtown L.A. where the televised awards were being held. Indeed, the V.I.P. areas in the Palladium's Bud Platinum Lounge were soon crowded with boldface notables like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, Ed Sheeran, Scooter Braun and Timberlake's former N' Sync bandmate Lance Bass. As a result, it became the best place to get insider scuttlebutt on the Grammy Awards, which Jay Sean found more musically inspiring, but culinarily lacking.

"I was hungry as hell at the ceremony -- it's the Grammys, and all they had was just nachos and hot dogs; they need to fix that," Jay Sean explained.

Despite the heavy celebrity and industry presence, Timberlake's Palladium show was intended mostly as a gift to his longstanding fan base; Timberlake even set up a Grammy viewing party for a select group of fans at the nearby W Hotel's Hollywood outpost. By 9:00 p.m., ticket holders had formed a line a block long down Sunset Boulevard, and thronged the entire Palladium parking lot, which was empty of cars to accommodate the crush. For over two and a half hours before showtime, audience members waited patiently, singing along to hip-hop hits like Watch The Throne's "N***as in Paris" and Tupac's "California Love" spun by Timbaland's self-proclaimed "official DJ," Freestyle Steve; as the anticipation grew overwhelming, the crowd began chanting "JT!"

At 11:35, a sixteen-piece band took to the stage (including a full horn section and a quartet of backup singers), followed by a tuxedoed Timberlake, replicating the 'Rat Pack' styling of his Grammy appearance, down to the musician stands emblazoned with "JT & the Tennessee Kids."

Bearing an acoustic guitar, Timberlake launched into his smash hit "Let Me Love You" from his breakthrough solo album, 2002's "Justified," kicking off a 14-song set heavy on hits. For nearly an hour-and-a-half, Timberlake played nearly all of his familiar smashes like "Cry Me A River" and "Señorita" along with three selections from "The 20/20 Experience" (including sexy new R&B ballad, "That Girl"), and energetic covers of Michael Jackson's "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" and INXS' "Need You Tonight." From the moment Timberlake appeared, the audience roared its appreciation and didn't let up, going predictably wild whenever the pop icon busted his trademark elastic dance moves during "Rock Your Body" and "My Love."

Excitement proved at an all-time high, though, during the encore. Jay-Z came out to reprise the Grammy performance of "Suit & Tie" from earlier in the evening, while longtime Timberlake creative partner Timbaland bolted onstage for a climactic "SexyBack," during which Timberlake puzzlingly yelled out "I love you, Los Angeles – don't let that stupid f***ing media tell you any different!"

If anything, the media has wholeheartedly embraced Timberlake's live return, along with every element of a massive marketing onslaught that expertly utilized Timberlake's Grammy triumph as launch pad. A new song, "Mirrors," appeared online immediately following Timberlake and Jay-Z's Grammy appearance; as well, two television commercials were broadcast indicating Timberlake's commitment to a series of major branding initiatives – a Target ad highlighting the March 19th release date of "The 20/20 Experience," and a spot for Bud Light Platinum (for which Timberlake was recently named the brand's Creative Director) that stayed on message with the album's sophisticated, retro black-tie imaging.
